Minimize smelly trash this summer

Minimize smelly trash this summer

Trash gives off stronger unpleasant odors during the summer. The combination of heat and humidity allow bacteria to grow faster and smells to travel further. Follow these tips to minimize odor.

  • Keep liquids out of your trash. Liquids aren’t supposed to go in the landfill anyway, but they can also create quite a mess in your dumpster. There are other ways to get rid of those pesky liquids.
  • When throwing out meat and/or meat packaging, put it in a grocery bag and then into a kitchen bag. Make sure your container lid is completely closed to reduce any odor.
  • Double bag pet waste and other particularly messy or smelly trash. This will help ensure it stays in at least one of the bags and makes for a much cleaner cart.
  • Buy stronger bags. Using stronger, thicker trash bags means they’re less likely to break or leak in your cart. You can also buy odor-reducing trash bags for extra smell protection.
  • Place all trash into a bag. This prevents liquid from settling at the bottom of a container and reduces odor and insect accumulation.
  • Items that go into recycling containers should be washed out but not bagged.
  • Keep your container lid closed.
  • Tie your trash bags.
  • If possible, keep your container out of the sun.
  • Rinse your residential container with hot water and soap after each pickup. Discard water onto gravel, grass area, and or into the sink to avoid pollutants going into storm drains.
  • Remove buildup at the bottom of your container using a sprayer or pressure washer.
  • Pour baking soda, bleach, or floor detergent at the bottom of your container after it is serviced to absorb strong odors.
